CFPB Puts Big Tech On Notice Over Digital Marketing
By Al Barbarino (August 10, 2022, 9:15 PM EDT) — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a rule Wednesday clarifying when digital marketers and purveyors of financial products are subject to consumer protection regulations, assuring Big Tech firms using modern marketing tactics that the rules apply to them. 

Digital marketers that are “materially involved” in the development of content strategy — including targeting customers based on their behavior and affecting their purchase behavior — are “service providers” and subject to the bureau’s oversight, according to the rule.

So too are the Big Tech firms that employ these strategies to market financial products, bureau Director Rohit Chopra warned in an announcement.
